15 Commerce Street #0

Located on a charming winding street in Greenwich Village, this classic 21 foot wide single family Federal was built in 1826. This is an enchanting house that has been in the same family for over 50 years and was the gathering place for luminaries, writers and scholars from both sides of the Atlantic, among them W. H. Auden and Joseph Campbell. This inviting house was the home of Michael Zimmer who created the exhibition piece "Sardine Museum and Herring Hall of Fame? on Grand Manan Island.

The house retains much original detail and charm. There is a lovely open parlor with wood burning fireplace as you enter with views of the garden and a secret bath hidden behind a bookcase wall. Downstairs is a dining room, kitchen and steps up to the garden. Above are 2 bedroom floors with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. There are original wide pine floors, mantles and moldings throughout the house and a lovely and private garden.

Commerce Street was named after one of the virtues of the French Revolution, along with Art, Science and Reason Streets. Mapped out in the late 1790s it was believed that these philosophical principles, founded in individual endeavor, could be used to combat tyranny, superstition, ignorance, and poverty. Some 200 years later only Commerce Street remains.
