Jackson Heights: Historic Architecture & Real Estate Value

One of NYC's most architecturally rich and culturally active neighborhoods, with surprising value

On October 19, 1993 the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission designated about 36 blocks of Jackson Heights a historic district, and the 25 homes that closed in the 90 days before October 1, 2026 had a median price of $545,000. The designation protects the courtyard buildings from exterior alterations. I have sold across NYC since 2001.

Origins of Jackson Heights

The Queensboro Corporation began developing Jackson Heights, in northwestern Queens, in 1911 as one of the first planned communities in the United States, designed around shared green space.

The Architectural Landscape

Co-ops and Garden Apartments

Most housing is co-op buildings and garden apartments from the 1920s and 1930s, built around shared interior courtyards with brick facades and stonework.

Co-op purchases go through a board application; our co-op board interview guide lists the paperwork.

Historic District Designation

Renovations and new construction in the district must follow Landmarks guidelines. The buildings are mostly Art Deco and Tudor Revival.

Green Space and Transit

Travers Park sits at the center of the neighborhood. The 7 Train runs through Jackson Heights, and the E and F trains and several bus routes add connections.

Co-ops are 56 of the 60 active listings, so this is a co-op market first. With 61 homes in contract against 60 active, line up financing before touring.
